Something like this....

   # smartctl -?

   #smartctl -t long /dev/hda    (Executes extended disk self-test)

   -t TEST, --test=TEST
        Run test.  TEST is: offline short long conveyance select,
	M-N pending,N afterselect,on afterselect,off
