Humm, must be a new bee there.  Did you try 

vim /boot/grub/grub.conf 

Without the " quotes of course, in a normal shell as root.  It seems 
pretty basic from here, but read the man pages on vi, vim and grub so 
you know your way around that 2 mode editor and know what you are 
doing to grub. Works every time here anyway.
