Check the XFree86 for the old versions. The README and/or RELNOTES
file should state the version of X it implements.

It's X11R6, for all that matters. Some years ago, the X Consortium disolved itself, leaving the source in public domain. The folks at XFree86 picked up (or had already picked up) the torch.
