i was wondering if squid can stop any1 from downloading exe's or zip files etc off the net??

You don't want to block them all. Make sure you have at least microsoft.com domain and the domain for your virus software open so your windows machines can download updates.
You can chain dansguardian with squid to get good content protection. Including blocking active x programs etc
