Bill,
This was a fresh install.
So far my only guess is that my machine has USB 1.1 rather than USB 2.0 ports.

I haven't tried plugging the external drive into my notebook which has USB 2.0.
I guess I should do that experiment.

So far I've turned up no clues searching and googling around.
