The machine was just upgraded from FC1 and I applied all the updates,
except that I also kept the 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 kernel around for cd/dvd
writing. Both 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 kernels show nothing in the logs when the
usb device is plugged in. Unfortunately, I don't have the 2.6.5 kernel
on those systems any more, but I can of course reinstall that kernel if
it solves the problem.
Interesing point: I have a lot of almost identical machines, and I use a
kickstart file to install them, so I'm quite confident that the installations
are identical. On most machines, usb works fine, there's just a couple
of them that refuse to see usb disks. Maybe it is one particular type of
mainboard that has this bug

I'll subscribe to that bug and see if a solution comes up.
