Not sure what you mean here - but I have a T40 with ATI 9000 - and
FC1/FC2 works reasonably well with the stock install - without any
modifications. I've tested 'dri' with glxgears - but I don't have any
other need for it.

And now that both RHL9 & FC1 are EOL (no more updates from redhat) -
you might want to try installing FC2.
