dialup probs: kppp doesn't work, system-config-network does

I can dial into my ISP just fine for an Internet connection with system-config-network (making the modem "active"), but a kppp dial-in will not see past the remote host IP. kppp connects, but is then dead to the world; it can't even see the DNS IP addresses of my ISP. Why is one working and the other not? I want to use kppp, or some other more normal, non-root way to connect.
