here is the error message i get when I want to do tar command :
# tar -zxvf blaxton.ca-20040908_103234.tar.tgz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

gzip also can not understand the file , here is the error message :
gzip: blaxton.ca-20040908_103234.tar.tgz already has .tgz suffix -- unchanged

What the hell is .tgz ? I can not open it at all ,we have a software that generate this kind of ziped tar ball , but i can not open it with tar or gzip .

.tgz is the same as .tar.gz - so "tar xzvf foo.tgz" should work. General hint: "file foo" normally gives you good information about a file.
