How to configure X display from the command line

Could someone tell me what commands work from the command line to
change the X display characteristics. I moved my home Linux box to
work, and it won't boot now into X. I get an error and then an
option to log in from a prompt. None of the redhat-... commands
seem to work in FC2, unless I'm doing something wrong.
