Problems with IDE tape drive and FC2

I am running the 2.6 kernel in Fedora Core 2. I am trying to get tape
backups working, but to no avail. The logs show:

kernel: ide-tape: hdd <-> ht0: Seagate STT20000A rev 8.43
kernel: ide-tape: hdd <-> ht0: 1000KBps, 6*54kB buffer, 9720kB pipeline,
110ms tDSC, DMA
kernel: ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc =  0, key = 3, asc = f0, ascq = 2b
kernel: ide-tape: ht0: drive not ready

Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Regards,

Andrew
