Your errors similar to things mentioned in this bugzilla entry, means
with XKB?

That was it.

using Option	    "XkbRules" "xorg"
instead of Option	    "XkbRules" "xfree86"

did the trick.

I guess upgrading meant no xorg.conf file was written and the old XFree86CONFIG was used instead but didn't quite work.
