What good will this do as I believe the xserver config is messed up.

If the config file is messed up then the server will not start properly and 
he is right back with the same problem. He needs to
Learn to use VI and the docs for the xserver and what ever windows system
He was using and fix the config file giving the problem by looking in
The log file for the error.

Start the computer and press 'e' to edit the command line. Put a 3 at the
end (after a space).  That will start you at init level 3, with no GUI.
Once logged in, type 'startx'
