Doug,

You may have to tap the key combination two or three times to switch the
output. On my Thinkpad the [blue Fn] + F7 combo steps through the
following modes:  LCD only, LCD + external, external only, then cycles
back to LCD only. You might have to be patient for a few seconds each
time you switch modes. Some external monitors and projectors have a few
built-in seconds of "drama" before they actually display anything.
