I use mencoder which comes with mplayer. No schedule. I just start the recording when I leave and
I stop it when I get back. Be aware that you cannot watch and record in the same time.

Here is a typical command line (works good on fedora 1 and 2 :-) ):

mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0:buffersize=256:fps=25 -ovc
lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1460:keyint=300  -oac copy -vop pp=0x20000  -o test.avi

It records the last channel I watch using xawtv. For crop and others see man pages.
