Richard,

1)  Not sure why to replied to the 1280x800 question to generate your
question...  I don't see what smartd has to do with the graphics resolution.

2)  Did you configure smartd?  Check in /etc/smartd.conf first.

3)  Does your drive and BIOS support smart?
