rpm -ivh  mplayer-1.0pre2-3.i386.rpm 

in general when you pass arguements to an application from the command 
line you place a hypen in fron t of the flag...

checking out the man page for a given application is a good way to get 
started with it's syntax. rpm has a heck of a lot of options which take a 
while to entirely get a handle on.
