Does it play media files(mp3/wav etc) properly?
If so, it is very likely that there is problem with
analog/digital CD playback.

There are 2 ways to playback audio CD,
1) Analog playback via a doggle wire from cd drive to
soundcard
2) Digital playback via the IDE interface

If you go for (1), check if the aforesaid cable is
connected properly.

(2) might not work for all drives, especially for old one.
I am not sure about how to specify linux to use digital
playback as well. Any comment here?
