also, the fc1 install disc comes with memtest86 on it, boot with the disc
in and then press (i think it's f2) the function key related to advanced
options, it'll be listed.  let it run for a while, it's pretty exaustive.

also, you may want to check out the 'linux rescue' command on the bootable
cd, you get a nice little rescue environment.
