Yep. Seems that by default only one application at a time can use the
/dev/dsp (or whatever). I find everything behaves much better if you
locate and enable the Gnome sound server, esd. I find it at:

"Start Here"/"Preferences"/"Sound"/"Enable Sound Server at Startup"
