I am winging it here, since I never did this, but the big test for rootiness 
is to look and see if the UID is 0.  I'm pretty sure this is why your 
attempts so far failed, since other users you create will be given a new UID 
(starting at UID==512 or something IIRC).

I think your solution will either be renaming the uid=0 user from 'root' to 
something else, or somehow forcing another user you set up to have uid=0 
instead of root.
