Doesn't one have to "make dep" after step 6 with 2.4.* kernels? [I know it
is not necessary with 2.6.* kernels.]

The first list is for fresh installs, my understanding is that "make dep"
isn't necessary if this is the first compile since install. But, if I'm
wrong, I'm sure I'll be quickly corrected ;)
