SUSE has an enhanced version of logrotate that does this as an option.
It has been tested on hundreds of thousands of production SUSE systems
for a couple of years, so it is robust. It is also fully backwards-
compatable with the existing Fedora/Redhat version of logrotate.

I have had an RFE on bugzilla for about 6 months now:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=108775

More details are there, including how to download the SUSE version.
If you think this is worth exploring, PLEASE add a comment. Perhaps
if Elliot Lee at Redhat gets enough comments in his mailbox he will
find time to look at the SUSE enhancements to the code.
