I have some additional information that might help diagnose my nvidia driver issue. I rebooted into the previous kernel and all the glxgears works just fine, as do my screensavers.

So it seems that I have a problem with the new kernel and the existing driver installation instructions.

I hope this helps diagnose the problem.
