This may also be a problem with your network card.  How did you setup
your network card when you installed?  Did you use a static IP or DHCP?
~ If DHCP are you sure your DHCP server is running on your network?  If
not this could cause problems, the firewall needs to know the IP address
of the network card before it can properly setup the firewall.

I would suggest turning off the firewall settings to be a temporary
measure!  This opens your machine up to all kinds of attacks on the
Internet if left off.
