Considering you are from the future, could you inform us of any new
viruses we could expect, maybe some figures on the exchange?
Just kidding :+}

Sounds like one of three things.

1) I had my APM daemon downing my system even though I was working on
it.

2) I have also seen a screensaver do similar things. {You did cover
that.}


3) Your hardware is giving up or is being interfered with.

Check your fans especially your power supply. If power drops to a
component like the screen card your system bios will detect that its not
there the OS will pick up the change and ajdust accordingly. 
The only blots on this theory is you are running Linux you cant hot swop
resolution. X must be restarted. mmmm

Microwave ovens and cellphones are also know to interfere with monitors,
Also if you have speakers next to the monitor (especially Big ones )

I also had an experience where a wireless lan card caused funny lines on
one of the monitors in an office block.
