I have a psc 1210 that had the same problem. first, Uninstall hpoj .90 and get at least ver .91. I also uninstalled the sane front and back ends and xsane and obtained updated versions from the sane website.

Printing is handled through CUPS and hpijs. Printing worked for for me right out of the box. It was the scanning that gave me fits. Once I upgraded the aforementioned packages, xsane worked beautifully except for one problem. The usb port isn't being turned loose after scanning, so you can't print directly after scanning. CUPS will give you "usb port busy" message. Powering the unit off and back on took care of that.

Hope this helps
