I can't recall booting a Linux system without one for a long time now, whether to incorporate scsi controller support, or ext3 support, or md support.

But I didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary except define pairs of partitions designated as software raid partitions, and clicking to make a raid partition from them during the installation.
