The question is :
is it sufficient to unplug the old monitor, plug the new one and fire up the computer??

Chances are your new monitor has better specs than the old one, so unplugging & plugging will do, even without rebooting (don't do that with older monitors, though!) After rebooting, I guess Kudzu will do its work and detect your shiny new Philips.
