what is the source of that "knowledge"?

Actually I have no that big file on any of my Fedora machines, but even
on my old RH7.2 system with ext3 filesystem I had no problem with a
backup tarball > 2GB size.


You should have had issues on 7.2, but not on 8.0 or newer.
