Sorry Dave!

First, to get networking running, delete
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth0. This file is normally not
needed, at least as you do not know about it.

Then go to http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ and
please read the documentation. It is for Redhat 9 but mostly fits for
Fedora Core 1 too.

For understanding about firewalling with Fedora/Linux you should
additional read the documentation on www.netfilter.org about iptables.
iptables is the tool to tell the kernel how he shall handle the network
traffic (i.e. let specific traffic pass or block it).
