I installed KDE 3.2 from the kde-redhat.sourceforge.net repository and they
have the same issue, ALSA is not an option on the Hardware tab.

I went ahead and installed ALSA and set it up, it seems to work great in
Gnome, but still overloads the cpu in KDE 3.2.

Have a look at http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/
They have KDE-3.2 packages, but they are still in the testing repository.
