Switch to init level 3 as suggested and start X manually to check  the error messages on the VT. Check if your /etc/X11/XF86Config has a valid screen resolution and all. if you can't get to /etc/inittab file then try passing options to grub at boot up time

Seems your prefdm or what it is calling is damaged. Change the default
init level to 3 in /etc/inittab and then check where the error lies.
Are you a gnome user or KDE user? Did you change anything lately or did
filesystem errors occur?
