I've been getting my updates for up2date from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/1/
but am finding lately that this site is extremely slow and frequently stalls.

Could some suggest a good alternate site from the Western US?

Thanx. I know of the mirrors listing.

What I was hoping for in my answer was for someone who has been using one of these sites to contribute based on their experience with it.

You basically have to find one that works for you unless you know someone on the same network as the network conjestion between you and the server as well as the server load will impact the mirror performance from your point of view.
