With kernel 2.4 you need to pass a kernel parameter in grub.conf or
lilo.conf at boot time like

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2140.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi

which is for the grub.conf. Note the hdX=ide-scsi. For lilo.conf it
would be a separate line

append="hdX=ide-scsi"

Where always the X in hdX must fit the CD-writer drive letter like c or
d.
