I believe the problem is that you need to install a cyrillic font.  I
don't currently have GAIM running, so I can't check to see how easy it is
to set this.  Unicode is Fedora's standard, which supports the cyrillic
font, but I don't knwo that GAIM doesn't default to a western-standard
font.  Also, you need to be sure that your font matches the character set
you're inputtin from the keyboard.  The standard for all Linux/Unix
machines is KOI8(R), which is built in to the Linux kernal.  Windows uses
a W-1251 standard.  Unicode, KOI8, and W-1251 are *not* compatable.  You
will see garbage if you're using the wrong font.

So, while I don't have an immediate guaranteed solution, hopefully this
has been of some use...
