The problem is not with RPM or corruption I think but more that the kernel is opening (trying to anyway) the DB file with O_DIRECT :

stat64("/var/lib/rpm/__db.001", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
open("/var/lib/rpm/__db.001", O_RDWR|O_DIRECT|O_LARGEFILE) = 3

I think this because it works with LD_ASSUME ( as show in original email ).

I'm thinking I need to upgrade some library to allow this call to succeed but I don't know what.
