Is the drive recognized in BIOS? And is it set to user, or LBA or
something other than "auto". Leaving it on "auto" can sometimes flake,
even when passing geometry.

Do you have mbr virus protection enabled in BIOS?

Boot onto a Win 98 boot floppy and try running "fdisk \mbr" and trying
again.
