Many thanks, Mike,

I can use xwd -out filename to
dump a window display to the file.

Following the man page, I can then use xwud -in filename
to read the contents of the dump file just produced.

The follow-up question is how do you turn this into a jpg file,
don't think it is mentioned in the man page.

Take a look at the console window in the screen dump.  That's the 
command I used at the time;  "xwd ...."
