    So I take it you made no progress and/or didn't get my message
before you went home- sorry about that.

    I'd pick an external modem for a couple of reasons:

    1.  You can always smack it and make it drop the line.

    2.  You can always tell what it's doing, with the external lights.

    3. (ok, I lie: so shoot me) An external, serial-conected modem CAN
NOT BE A WINMODEM.

    See http://compgeeks.com for $20 external modems.  They're good
people over there.
