Is it a version 3 or 4 card? I've heard that version 3 works, whereas version 4 doesn't. Only version 4 is available in stores currently.

it is a version 3 card. you might want to look at http://www.linuxant.com.
i just downloaded it a couple days ago (integrated laptop wireless) and it
seems to work fine. it's an extra $20 (after a free month's trial) and it's not
open source, but if neither of those bother you it might help out.
