Thanks for the help.I tried it. Sure seems like it should work, but it didn't:

..................................
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: unbind<hdh5,1>
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: export_rdev(hdh5)
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: RAID level 1 does not need chunksize! Continuing anyway.
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k md-personality-3, errno = 2
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: personality 3 is not loaded!
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md :do_md_run() returned -22
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: md0 stopped.
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: unbind<hdg5,0>
Dec 28 15:08:59 nhi_server kernel: md: export_rdev(hdg5)
.............................

Here's modules.conf:

alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 8139too
alias char-major-180  off
alias char-major-188  off
alias md-personality-3 raid1
