PROBLEM: megaraid2 performance problems with 2.4.32

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Sorry to send this mail to so many people. Feel free to ignore this if
you don't think it's appropriate for you.

[1.] One line summary of the problem:

The megaraid2 driver from the 2.4.32 kernel has horrible performance
compared to the 2.4.31 one.

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

When upgrading kernels we noticed a steep drop in transfer rate from our
scsi tape to our scsi disk (all non-raid (raid 0 logical devices) but
using the Dell MegaRAID 518 DELL PERC 4/DC RAID Controller). The
performance drops from 24MByte/second to ** 2MByte/second when
performing a restore (tar) from tape to disk.

Our kernels are patched with the ghosting patch
(http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/autofs/v4/autofs4-2.4.29-20050404.patch) and an ipmi patch (http://linux.dell.com/files/ipmi/ipmi_kcs_drv.patch). I believe both patches are irrelevant to these problems.

We tested with 2.4.31 (with mentioned patches) and the performance is
ok. With 2.4.32 the performance is bad. Copying
drivers/scsi/megaraid2.[ch] from 2.4.31 to 2.4.32 results is a usable
kernel with ok performance.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):

megaraid2, 2.4.32

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):

Linux version 2.4.32-exp (root@turin) (gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)) #1 SMP Mon Jan 9 14:51:07 CET 2006

[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
     resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
n/a

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
     problem (if possible)

Two test runs transferring 10GByte of data. These results were done on
2.4.31 and 2.4.32 kernels with identical .config and building tools. The
filesystem type used was reiserfs. Activity on the system was comparable
with all tests (not single user mode though).
